Five Alternatives to January’s Overcrowded Gyms – #5 Team Vortex

January 6, 2016 by Lindsay Diven

Yesterday’s alternative got you outside with your neighbors in the Nonahood. In today’s alternative, we are featuring the endurance sports training team – Team Vortex.

Team Vortex

Team Vortex is a run, walk, and triathlon club whose home base is the Lake Nona YMCA with practices throughout Central Florida. They have walkers, runners, cyclists, swimmers and triathletes at all levels and ages. There is a junior team for youth ages 5 to 14 and an adult team for everyone ages 15 and up.Team vortex 3

The Team meets almost every day to practice. They have both morning and evening options six to seven days a week, based on season, to accommodate everyone’s availability.

The cost is $75 per year to become a member for the adult team and you can join at any time during the year. Youth members pay quarterly and sign up at the YMCA. YMCA members have access to all of the equipment including the pool during special team dedicated hours. Non-YMCA members will have to pay additional fees for guest access. A benefit to joining is that new team members get paired up with another more experienced member to serve as a mentor and training partner.Team vortex 4

Team Vortex trains and participates in several races and competitions each year. For 2016, some of the upcoming races are:

  • Tomoka Half Marathon in Ormond Beach, FL
  • Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, FL
  • Ironman full and half competition in North Carolina

Members don’t have to sign up for a race to join. Team Vortex encourages athletes with varying levels of experience from beginners training for their first 5k race to those training for Ironman competitions to join.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30am – Swim at YMCA Pool
