Work Well: Summer Courage

June 22, 2023 by Natalia Foote

As a child, summer was often a time of excitement and adventure, filled with endless possibilities for exploration and fun. One of the most memorable aspects of summer was the opportunity to try new things. From learning to swim or ride a bike to trying new foods or visiting new places, the summer months provided the perfect backdrop for taking risks and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. These experiences not only provided a sense of accomplishment and confidence but also created lasting memories that are cherished for years to come.

As adults, we aren’t afforded the same time and thus the same range of new experiences. We sometimes end up living life as if it were Groundhog Day. And the older we get, the more we get stuck in our ways doing the same things that are comfortable. We lose the ability to practice being courageous.

It takes courage to try new things. Some argue that it is more important to have courage than it is to have confidence. It takes courage to think differently. It takes courage to try something new. It takes courage to step outside of your comfort zone. Confidence is a result of the initial courage it took to take the first step. Stephen King said, “The scariest moment is just before you start. After that, things can only get better.”

Face fear this summer and flex your courage muscle!

This summer, try something NEW. Summer is a great time to step out of your comfort zone and try new activities. Having courage can help you take the leap and try things like learning a new sport, going on an adventure, or traveling to a new place. Learn to surf, zipline, or go parasailing!

As a result of trying something new, build your confidence! By facing your fears and having the courage to try new things, you can build confidence in yourself and your abilities. This can have a positive impact on other areas of your life, such as work, relationships and personal growth. Simply trying something new lets you realize how much of life you can still explore!

Summer can bring its own set of challenges, such as facing your fear of water or heights, or dealing with social anxiety at events. We all know “the weather” is coming. Flex your courage muscles like a warrior and without dread. Prep for the heat and for the hurricane! Having the courage to face these challenges head-on can help you overcome them and grow as a person.

Summer is a time for socializing and meeting new people. Having the courage to strike up a conversation, join a group activity, or attend an event can lead to meaningful connections and friendships. We are so fortunate in Lake Nona to have several meet-up groups. There are various cycle group meetups. Mom, Move, Learn events happen several times a year. Business meetups happen weekly! If you haven’t found your group, have the courage to be the one who starts it!

The summer months offer a unique opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery, and having the courage to try new things can be incredibly rewarding. By stepping outside of our comfort zones and facing our fears, we can build confidence, overcome challenges, make meaningful connections, and create lasting memories. Whether it’s trying a new sport, traveling to a new place, or simply socializing with new people, showing courage during the summer months can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life. So, this summer, let’s embrace the spirit of adventure and take that leap of faith for the benefits of showing courage can be truly life-changing.
