February at the USTA National Campus always means one thing – the start of the college tennis season.
This year marks an important year for college tennis in Lake Nona as the campus will play host to the NCAA Division I, II and III Championships in May, but before that, the action kicks off this month with the return of College MatchDay.
College MatchDay is the USTA’s popular neutral-site college tennis showcase event, and it will feature two marquee matchups in 2023. College MatchDay has averaged more than 1,000 fans in attendance since it debuted at the campus in 2017.
First, on Thursday, February 2, in what has become an annual tradition at the USTA National Campus, the men of Florida and Florida State will face off in a rivalry match. A capacity crowd is expected as the two rivals battle for bragging rights and a decisive early-season victory.
The Florida men have been one of the top programs in all of college tennis the past two seasons, winning the team national title in 2021 right here in Lake Nona and also producing back-to-back NCAA men’s singles champions.
The second College MatchDay event of 2023 will feature both the men’s and women’s teams from Air Force and Navy on Saturday, February 18. Air Force has twice played at College MatchDay in the past, squaring off against service academy rival Army. This will be the Navy’s first appearance in Lake Nona.
The Air Force-Navy match will feature a number of military-themed tributes, including a free clinic for veterans and a flyover.
And these College MatchDay events are just one part of the busy college tennis schedule at the USTA National Campus in February. As usual, the campus serves as the home courts for the UCF men’s and women’s tennis teams. Both teams have home matches in February, and their schedules continue throughout the spring.
There are also a number of additional neutral-site matches scheduled throughout the month as teams from across the country take advantage of Orlando’s February weather and get an opportunity to play on the courts that will be used for this year’s NCAA Championships.
For local players, there are also a number of exciting opportunities coming up at the campus to enhance your game with Adult Camps slated to be held throughout the spring.
One of those opportunities is a pickleball camp that will be held on March 5 with Jay Devilliers, one of the top-ranked pickleball players in the world. There will be two 90-minute clinics and two hour-long “Play with the Pro” sessions throughout the day, which will culminate with a social giving participating players an opportunity to get to spend some time with Devilliers.
