Overcrowding Alert: Orange County Animal Services has 220 Dogs in Shelter

Waives Adoption Fees on Sele

Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) currently has nearly 550 animals under its umbrella of care, 347 physically at the shelter and an additional 194 in foster care. Yesterday alone the shelter received 68 animals, 33 of which were surrendered by their families.

In response to the high volume of animals in the shelter’s care, Animal Services is waiving the adoption fees on animals available for immediate adoption, pets that have already been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. There are approximately 60 pets currently available for immediate adoption.

“We have very limited available kennel space at the moment and unfortunately more and more pets continue to arrive every hour,” said Diane Summers, manager of Orange County Animal Services. “We have two big asks for our community – for those in a position to adopt, we implore you to visit the shelter today and take home a pet; for those that have found an animal or are looking to rehome one, please exhaust every possible option before resorting to taking up what little space we currently have remaining.”

The shelter’s Sleepover Program allows families to take home a pet for a trial adoption period of up to two weeks at no cost. “If you want to help a pet right now and provide them a break from the shelter, please consider the Sleepover Program as a means to achieve that goal,” said Summers.

Those interested in adopting are encouraged to check out the available pets on the shelter’s website here. More information on the adoption process can be found here. Additionally, the shelter is actively recruiting new members to its foster care program.
