If the phrase “FASHION TRENDS” conjures images of emotionless models hobbling down lavish runways in something you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing…I totally get it. The chasm between runway standouts and “normal people clothes” has been large for some time now. (But the times, they are a changin’.) It feels as if we are in a new era of fashion where truly, anything goes. And our everyday wear now more closely mirrors those artsy runway debuts. 

While these avant-garde displays of elaborate couture can feel more fairytale than fashion, their influence on the ready-to-wear pieces we’re served up on Target shelves and department store racks is heavier now more than ever. This intersection of edgy art and what’s in stores 

can leave some of us without direction when it comes to getting dressed. So, I’ve poured over the runway critics’ top trends to guide you on how to try them out for yourself. Here’s the 2023 playful (yet totally wearable) trends that are perfect for the runway of your real life.

Business Dress Required 

Blazers are no longer reserved for the office-bound professional but have claimed their spot in the everywoman’s closet. We love the effortless, chic style of a casual look topped off with a blazer. And this season, other suiting pieces stake their claim as closet staples. If you are looking for an easy way to add polish to your casual looks this spring and summer, opt for suiting separates or business-inspired looks. To try the trend: 

• Pair wide leg dress pants with a fitted striped top and neutral sneakers. 
• A suit skirt feels date night ready with a graphic tee and strappy heels.
• An oversized linen blazer adds finesse to your weekend shorts and tank tops.
• The monochromatic three-piece suit (pants + silky top + blazer) is sure to keep your professional pieces feeling fresh.

Lux Spring Sequel
They’re not just for winter anymore! We’re seeing the lines between seasons blur as lux details usually reserved for fall and winter are showing up again. Sequins, vegan leather, feathers and embellished denim are all sticking around! Sequins sport a softer hue this time ’round, and leather pieces pose an updated riff on summer shorts and skirts. Embellishments (think all over gems + pearls) are adding their own “look at me” spin to jeans. And I am thrilled to see the return of the feather hemline. If you (like me) ascribe to the “more is more” methodology of style, it’s our time to shine, babe! Bold, punchy colors are showing up big this season. And silver is the new darling of neutrals. Neons and saturated, candy-colored separates outshine spring’s more traditional pastel tones. To try the trend: 

• Add in pops of neon jewelry to both your neutral and colorful looks.
• Rock a bold metallic silver shoe or purse for both day and night looks.
• In lieu of spring pastels, opt for richer, more vibrant pinks, yellows and greens.

Y2K won’t quit

The Y2K trends continue with cargo pants, sheer layers and the return of floor-sweeping denim. Was it a pollen-induced need for extra tissues that inspired the return of the utilitarian cargo pant? (so. many. pockets.) We may never know why some things come back. This time, though, its usual olive or khaki is upgraded to bolder colors. They’re topped (again) with sheer long sleeve layers. And hold on to your bucket hat, ladies, the denim maxi skirt is back! Relive your youth by updating this playful, nostalgic date night look. To try the trend:
