The first time we met Don Rimx was in 2019, when we got to know more about his background as an artist, his larger-than-life mural creations, and how he arrived in the Lake Nona area. Three years later, Don Rimx is far from slowing down and just completed yet another mural in Orlando at the EA Sports Building located downtown. Let’s dive into his latest interview.
Nonahood News: The last time you were featured in Nonahood News was 2019. So many things have changed since then. How has your artistic journey evolved?
Don Rimx: I continue evolving through all the new opportunities and experiences that come my way. What’s really excited me lately are all the new projects that I’ve been involved in in the state of Florida and especially Orlando.
NHN: Walk me through the process of completing a mural. What’s the most rewarding part of the journey?
DR: The process is my favorite part. From developing the concept to the mural production, it’s a time of learning and an opportunity to do something new.
An example of the process on an exterior wall: Clean the surface of the wall, apply primer, mark the composition with the guidelines, fill in the colors, add volume and depth, outline with spray paint, and clean up any drips.
NHN: Tell me about the mural you just completed at the EA Sports Building in Downtown Orlando. How did this mural come to fruition?
DR: This mural was born from the idea of a dreamscape and how dreams can come true. EA Sports contacted me as they were looking for a local artist. We worked with them for a year until the final location on the building was decided. From there, [we] worked on the design and approvals with the City of Orlando. And in December, I produced the grand-scale mural along with one painting assistant and videographer. It took me two weeks to complete it.
NHN: Which of your newest murals are your favorites? Which has been the most challenging?
DR: I can honestly say that the Electronic Arts Mural, Sueños Naranja, was interesting and challenging as I have never painted at that height nor on that surface area. I’m very satisfied with the result!
In your original interview, you mentioned that your desire to become an artist was to create an original style that no one has ever seen before. How would you classify this style?
DR: I don’t have a name for it. It’s just me.
NHN: I noticed Puerto Rican/Taino influences within your work. How does your heritage help to influence your art?
DR: I am always very proud to represent my identity as a Puerto Rican and Latino. My cultural heritage and values help guide the theme and inspiration for my creations.
NHN: You’ve been a part of the Lake Nona area for a few years now. What do you think about the area’s growth?
DR: I think it is developing quite fast, which is exciting to watch. My hope in all the growth is that they continue supporting local arts and culture.
NHN: Which city would you love to complete a mural that you have yet to do so?
DR: I’d love to paint in Chicago.
