LYNX and Orange County Partnership Brings Free Rides to Vaccination Site for Seniors

The Orange County Government and transportation giant LYNX have arranged a program that will provide free rides for seniors to the Orange County Convention Center in order to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations. Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties will have access to the free ride program.

“We understand not everyone has the means to drive to the Convention Center,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “By partnering with LYNX, we hope this will be a viable option for a vulnerable senior to get vaccinated.”

To qualify, people aged 65 and older only have to provide proof of their scheduled COVID-19 vaccination appointment. LYNX drivers will drive directly to the person’s home, pick them up, transport them to the Convention Center, and stay throughout the entire process. After the vaccination is completed, the LYNX driver will take the senior directly home. The LYNX buses will only visit the Orange County Convention Center vaccination site.

Masks must be worn at all times on the bus, and one family member or caregiver may accompany the senior.

“Transit and transportation is all about providing opportunities to those who need to get around,” said LYNX CEO Jim E. Harrison, “and moving thousands of people each and every day is what we do. Nothing makes us happier than removing mobility hurdles by providing trips to those who need to get around and, in this case, access to the vaccine – a key component in crushing COVID-19.”

LYNX must be contacted at least 48 business hours before the vaccination appointment to properly schedule a ride. The transportation company collaborated with the Office of Emergency Management to arrange for all seniors to have the option to get vaccinated. Orange County residents can schedule their free ride by dialing 3-1-1, and those residing in neighboring counties can call (407) 836-3111. Furthermore, ACCESS LYNX clients can schedule a free ride by calling (407) 423-8747 and selecting option #4.
