To Generation Z: A Holiday Gift Guide for Students and Teens

November 30, 2020 by Natalia Jaramillo

This year in this COVID-19 world, the holidays will undoubtedly be different. You might be in the same financial status you were a year ago as a struggling student trying to make ends meet and finding yourself, again, stressing over what presents to get for your family. Or maybe you’re a teen who doesn’t make any money but still wants to participate in gift-giving. Whatever the case may be, here are some gift ideas to help alleviate these struggles.

One of the cheapest and most useful gifts to make this year is a mask. It’s the most unexpected accessory of 2020, and we will most likely still need them for 2021. You could make a great holiday present by simply cutting up fabric from old t-shirts or pants and looking for some sort of string or laces to make a mask at home. You can look up YouTube videos for detailed instructions on how to make these masks from scratch.

Make Christmas ornaments or holiday decorations for family members. You can also look up on YouTube different methods for decorating or even making your own ornaments from scratch. Making your own ornament as a present is a relatively inexpensive gift, and it’s a gift that can be used every year during the holiday season. And we all know how the saying goes – good things come in small packages!

If you’re skilled with a camera, another cute gift idea would be giving someone a few memorable pictures. Using what you know about the person who’ll receive this gift, take some pictures of sights or landscapes that you know they’ll enjoy. Gifting pictures can be so meaningful, and it can last for a lifetime! And don’t just think digital; take it a step further and frame the photo for the person so they can easily hang it in their home. This idea can also apply to anyone with an artistic passion or hobby. If you are into painting, make a beautiful piece of art, or if you are skilled in graphic design, make and personalize your own card for a special someone!

Lastly, if you’d just like to keep it simple, use apps to send eCards for free to wish your family members a good holiday from afar. If you are practicing social distancing from family this year, then sending an eCard or even an electronic gift card can serve as a great option. They will receive your well wishes via email, and you get to creatively decorate the card and write out a sentiment that makes it feel like you are right there with them.
