Hunger Action Month Highlights Multiple Ways for Community to Help Feed Hope
As the region’s largest emergency food provider, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida knows that every action makes a difference – and this September, the food bank is calling on members of the community to take at least one action to help feed hope.
Hunger Action Month, observed every September, is a time to amplify the work that Second Harvest does year-round. With federal funding cuts threatening local hunger relief efforts, Second Harvest needs as much support as possible and there are many ways to get involved throughout September:
- Register for the inaugural “Hunger Never Sleeps” 24-hour volunteer marathon
- Wear orange on Sept. 9 for Hunger Action Day
- Attend a “Food for Thought” tour on Sept. 17
- Donate 30 nonperishable food items
- Host a virtual food drive
- Purchase “hunger fighter” merchandise to wear throughout September and beyond
- Donate $30 for 30 days to help feed hope
- Sign up to volunteer in Orlando or Melbourne to help sort and prepare food for distribution
- Become a monthly meal maker
- Take a pledge to advocate for hunger relief
- Like and follow SHFBCF on social media
“Community generosity ensures that we can continue meeting the rising need for food assistance across Central Florida,” said Derrick Chubbs, president and CEO. “Hunger is a daily crisis for thousands of families who face tough decisions about paying for food, housing or health care each month. Every action counts – no matter when it’s taken. From volunteering … to donating … to sharing Second Harvest’s mission of feeding hope, we all have a role to play.”
