Later today at 1 pm, Never Again UCF will be hosting March For Our Lives at Lake Eola in response to the recent school shooting in Parkland Florida. The group, consisting of Central Florida high school students, Marjory Stoneman Douglas alumni and other supporters from the community will be marching from Lake Eola to the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center.
Never Again UCF was put together by Trevor Wild, a graduate from MSD and a Parkland local. According to Wild, he created the Never Again instagram account four days after the school shooting had happened in Parkland. He was attempting to get as many students as possible to come together and speak out against gun violence. “I am not a special person. I am just a regular person that happened to get tied into this…all I did was create the Instagram account at 2 o’clock in the morning four days after the shooting and every single step of the way has been a learning experience,” said Wild. He goes on to say that gun violence is something that can affect every single person, and it is not something that we should chose to ignore and be blind to. He says he is putting on this event for “all the kids in the country” because no one deserves to go through what his community in Parkland is going through.
Cameron Marsh, a current UCF student who is the designing communications lead for Never Again UCF says just a month ago the group went from only about eight people who responded to Trevors outreach on social media to a group of students who are organizing the whole march downtown. “All these people who are either showing up for the first time to volunteer or who have been here since our first meeting on Memory Mall are just amazing people who want to make a change,” says Marsh.
The march downtown will also have appearances from performers such as the Orlando Gay Choir and Lake Nona High School student Alyssa Ragu who was featured on American Idol. MSD survivor Amanda Marty and Pulse survivor Neema Bahrami will also be attending as guest speakers along with many others from the community.
