Lake Nona Interiors Insider: Volume Nineteen: Designing a Home You Love: How Your Space Impacts Mood, Relationships and Daily Life

February 12, 2026 by Edina Houston Leave a Comment

February is usually all about love. Flowers, cards, date nights and sweet gestures. But there’s another kind of love that deserves just as much attention: the love you feel inside your home.

Our homes are where real life happens. They hold early mornings and long workdays, after-

school chaos, quick dinners, movie nights that go way past bedtime, and those quiet moments when the house finally settles. When a home is designed with intention, it doesn’t just look beautiful; it supports your mood, strengthens relationships and makes daily life feel easier and more enjoyable.

I always tell my clients this: Your home should love you back.

The Spaces Where Love Actually Lives

The most-loved rooms in a home are rarely the most formal ones. They’re the spaces where people naturally gather, relax and stay awhile.

I have clients who swear by family movie night, and you can tell the moment you walk into their home. There’s a deep, comfy couch (the kind you can fully sink into) layered with everyone’s favorite throws and throw pillows. Not decorative pillows you carefully move out of the way, but the ones meant to be used, shared and occasionally fought over.

Depth matters when it comes to seating. If you can’t stretch out, curl up or relax comfortably, the room won’t invite connection. Deep seating encourages people to linger, and lingering is where conversation, laughter and togetherness happen.

Instead of a traditional coffee table, I often recommend swapping in an upholstered ottoman with a tray. It instantly softens the space, makes it more kid-friendly and works perfectly for drinks, popcorn and movie-night snacks. It’s one of those simple design changes that makes a room feel more relaxed and livable.

And don’t forget: This cozy gathering space doesn’t always have to be in the main family room. A loft or bonus room can be the perfect place to create a lounge-style setup. These spaces tend to feel less formal and more forgiving, which makes them ideal for real life and real moments.

DIY Love Projects That Add Meaning

Home updates do not always come from big renovations. Sometimes it’s the personal, meaningful touches that make a home feel special.

One of my favorite DIY ideas is a modern black-and-white photo gallery wall. Family photos, everyday moments, vacations – when printed in black and white – create a timeless, cohesive look that works with almost any design style. It feels personal without feeling cluttered and becomes a daily reminder of what truly matters.

Another simple but powerful idea is a Love Notes Wall. Using chalkboard paint in a mudroom, hallway or exit space creates a spot for family messages, reminders, encouragement and even quick doodles. Seeing a handwritten “Have a great day” or “We love you” note on the way out the door can completely change the tone of your day.

The Primary Bedroom: A Space to Slow Down and Cuddle Up

Your primary bedroom should feel like a retreat – not a storage unit for laundry, clutter or

unfinished to-do lists.

This is the space where you end your day and begin the next, so comfort really matters. Layered bedding, soft throws, warm lighting and calming colors help signal your body to slow down. When a bedroom feels cozy and intentional, it naturally encourages rest, reconnection and those quiet, end-of-day moments when everything finally feels still.

If possible, try to keep work out of the bedroom. Desks, laptops, paperwork and constant notifications make it harder for your mind to shut off. Creating that boundary allows your bedroom to do what it’s meant to do. Help you rest, recharge and truly be present in the space you’re in.

Create a Spa-Like Retreat at Home

Self-care doesn’t always require a spa appointment. With a few thoughtful changes, your bathroom can feel like a calming retreat.

Think plush towels, soothing neutral or earth-toned colors and a touch of greenery to bring life into the space. Even something simple like eucalyptus in the shower or a small plant on the vanity can make a big difference. Soft lighting, minimal clutter and natural textures help turn an everyday bathroom into a place where you can unwind, even if it’s just for a few quiet minutes.

Designing for Real Life (Not Perfection)

The most loved homes aren’t perfect. They’re designed for real people, real routines and

real moments:

When your home supports how you actually live, love shows up naturally.

That’s why intentional design matters. Deep seating creates spaces meant for connection. Ottomans with trays offer flexibility and comfort. Layered throws and pillows add warmth and invite use. Black-and-white photos keep personal moments timeless. Chalkboard paint encourages communication. Plush towels, greenery and calming colors bring spa-like calm into everyday routines. And using lamps instead of harsh overhead lighting instantly softens a space and makes it feel more inviting.

These choices aren’t about perfection, they’re about presence.

This February, take a look at the rooms you spend the most time in. Do they invite comfort?

Do they encourage connection? Do they support the life you’re living right now?

Because the most beautiful homes aren’t just styled well. They’re lived in, loved and felt every single day.
